Jacobi operators andJacobi vector fields arise in a natural way in the study of geodesic variations as a measureof the geodesic deviation. Jacobi vector fields constitute a basic tool in the study of manygeometric problems. Although it is difficult to determine them explicitly, many propertiescan be obtained directly from the knowledge of the Jacobi operators.
